On April 28, several students and staff from NMS attended the Special Olympics at Fitchburg State University. The day started with a royal send off for the athletes organized by our Student Council. Members of the band performed, students held signs and cheered while the athletes made their exit from the building. Thank you to the Student Council for organizing this very special event. The sports events the athletes participated in were a relay race, soccer skills, football toss, obstacle course and a 25 meter run/walk. There was also lots of fun and dancing in the “Olympic Square” where the DJ had great music and the athletes could dance with the Fitchburg State mascot. It was a wonderful day and everybody had a blast. Congratulations athletes! Check out a video below:
Recently, one of our seventh graders, Elaina Greco competed in the Eastern National Gymnastics Competition in Michigan. Easterns is a competition for Level 9 gymnasts, who qualified within each region. Only the top 7 girls in each age group are chosen! Basically, Elaina competed against the best girls in half of the United States, for her age.
Elaina took 1st place in the Beam, 8th place on Floor, and 9th All Around. Competition was fierce. Elaina took 8th on Floor with a score of 9.4 , while the 1st place winner scored 9.5!
Way to go Elaina! Check out her videos!
At their first meet of the season against Groton-Dunstable, both the girls and boys track teams did exceptionally well! The boys won a tight meet by a score of 45 to 41, and, while the girls put up an amazing effort, they were not victorious against a very strong GD team.
Due to weather, track practice is cancelled for today. Unfortunately, the gym is being used for floor hockey and it is pouring outside! We are looking forward to better weather next week!
We are proud to offer Outdoor Track this spring to 6-8 grade students. There are no tryouts and all students are welcome to participate. Athletes need only a pair of running shoes, shorts, a tee shirt, and water bottle. Tee shirts for meets will be provided. The season runs from the end of March until the end of May. Practices are held from 2:40 to 3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Meets begin in mid-April and are held at North Middlesex Regional High School or another local school. The school district provides transportation to all meets. A calendar of events is below, but it is also available online through the NMRHS athletics website: http://www.mwlma.org.
Some of the events students are able to participate in are shot put, discus, long jump and high jump. Running events include the 100M, 200M and 4x100M relay. Long distance runners can choose between the 400M, 800M and the mile run. Each student can participate in two throwing and two running events.
