Dear Middle School Families:
As you know, it has been the district’s goal to align both middle schools by creating a schedule that best meets the needs of a middle school learner. Using recommendations made by the New England League of Middle Schools, feedback from parents, staff, and students as well as evidence based research, we have completed this task.
Next year, both schools will continue to utilize the teaming model as recommended by the New England League of Middle Schools. As part of the teaming model, teachers will have “team time” during the week to discuss student needs and plan curriculum. Also, both schools will follow a five day schedule.
Students in grades 5 and 6 will take the following classes: math, ELA, reading, science and social studies daily. They will also have the following Unified Arts classes: music, art, PE, health, library, STEM, and drama. Students will have PE twice per week.
Students in grades 7 and 8 will take the following classes: math, ELA, science, social studies, and Spanish daily. They will also have the following Unified Arts classes: art, music, PE, and health. Students will have PE twice per week.
Performing Arts continue to be an important part of the middle school experience. Students in all grades will have access to both the band and chorus program. Students are welcome to participate in both band and chorus. Students will have one in school band/chorus rehearsal each week. Band students will also have a band lesson during the school day once per week. Additional rehearsals for 6-8 band and chorus including Select Chorus and Jazz Band will take place before/after school. Late buses will be available for after school rehearsals. Both schools will offer at least one play or musical during the year with rehearsals taking place after school.
