Congratulations Swimmers!

Before vacation, two of our sixth grade students attended the 2018 Nationals Swimming Championships in Florida.  Abriana Constrom and Isabella Vasapolli have worked hard all season and were determined to swim well and their hard work paid off!
Out of 543 swimmers, Abriana made the top 10 & 20 for each of the events she swam. She was the top female on her swim team to earn the highest points, individually, and for her team. Isabella took an overall 14.91 seconds off her times, earning personal bests.  She also came in first place in her heat for the breaststroke and third place in her heat for freestyle. Way to go girls!

Extended Learning Survey

SNOW DAY EXTENDED LEARNING PILOT SURVEYS (MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL JANDA)
Thank you for your support of the district’s Snow Day Extended Learning Program pilot during this school year. The Snow Day Extended Learning program provided the students of NMRSD with real-time, authentic learning opportunities to replace canceled school days.  Teachers provided curriculum-based learning that their students could complete in place of a canceled school day. Assignments were short-term, unit-based or a long-term project equal to multiple days of learning.
Although we firmly believe that the highest form of learning takes place in a classroom with a qualified teacher, support staff or specialist, we also acknowledge that days made up at the end of the school calendar are not of the same quality as those that could be offered with extended learning opportunities.  Students in the twenty-first century will likely have at least one online class in college, and many will be preparing for employment set in a work-from-home environment. The extended learning opportunities help build a foundation for this type of learning and work production for the students of North Middlesex.
During this pilot year, which began on January 16, 2018, we used all five Extended Learning days approved by the school committee as follows:
Wednesday, January 17-Extended Learning Day #1
Wednesday, February 7-Extended Learning Day #2
Thursday, March 8-Extended Learning Day #3
Tuesday, March 13-Extended Learning Day #4
Wednesday, March 14-Extended Learning Day #5
The last scheduled day of the 2017-18 year is scheduled for Monday, June 18, 2018.
In order to help the committee make a recommendation to the School Committee about the Snow Day Extended Learning Program going forward, we are asking all district parents and staff to complete a brief survey about their experience with the pilot program this year to help guide our future recommendations. The survey links are below and are specific to each school level, as well as, one for NMRSD staff.  You may fill in each survey that applies to your situation.  The survey will be open until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018. We greatly appreciate your input to help the Snow Day Extended Learning Committee determine recommendations to present to the school committee regarding the continuation of this program.

Spring Safety Tips

The beautiful weather has finally arrived and we are thrilled to see students out and about in the community. Please take a moment to review the following safety tips with your children:

  • Always walk in pairs or with a group.
  • Make sure somebody at home knows where you are, who you are with and when you are expected home.
  • Use the crosswalks and crossing guard when crossing the street.
  • Don’t talk to strangers, or get a vehicle with somebody you don’t know.  Also, don’t accept food or drink from strangers.
  • Wear your helmet when riding a bike or scooter.
  • If you are approached by a stranger, report it to an adult immediately.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • If you see something that doesn’t look right, say something to an adult.
