Over 60 million girls between the ages of 9 and 18 are currently out of school worldwide and because of this, they cannot support their families. Many face issues including child marriage, HIV and extreme poverty. We are looking to change this to the point that every single one of them receives the education they deserve.
Through our bravery project in ELA with Ms. Hall, we were exposed to the courage of a young woman, just a girl at the time, named Malala Yousafzai. At only age 11, she began speaking out against the Terrorist group, the Taliban, invading her homeland (Pakistan) and risked her life doing so. The Taliban said no females could go to school, show any open skin in public, watch movies or listen to music, or even leave home without a ‘superior’ male relative. In 2012, at age 15, on her way home from school, she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunmen at point blank range and survived. Today, she continues to stand up for girls all around the world, and is the youngest person ever to earn the Nobel Peace Prize.
We have decided to take our project one step further and join Malala in her organization, the Malala Fund, whose goal is to make sure every girl receives, a safe, quality, 12 years of education. Although it is often a pain to go to school for kids like us in the United States, we do realize what a privilege and opportunity it is for us, and we think it is totally unacceptable for anybody to have less.
At the upcoming chorus concert on Thursday, December 10, we will be having a Bake Sale in the lobby and all proceeds will go directly to our page on the Malala Fund, helping us reach our goal of $1,000. We are almost halfway there and any and all support is greatly appreciated! Please bring some cash to pay, and look for the pink (Malala’s favorite color) and green (Pakistan flag’s color) decorated table!
All baked goods – $1
Pink and Green bracelets – $0.50
